As part of the 2008 AIA National Convention, held in Boston, Merge co-founded Young Architects Boston – a group of 10 young design firms. Together, these firms created a collaborative installation, “Parti Wall, Hanging Green”, to showcase the city’s emerging practices. The installation and exhibition, called “Parti Wall, Hanging Green,” formed a prototypical growing-wall suspended from a blank brick surface on a building newly converted to loft apartments Boston’s South End.
The five-story-high planted structure was installed for two months adjacent to the pinkcomma gallery, where an exhibition featuring the collaborative design process for the installation and work by each individual firm was also on display. The vertical garden showcased how Boston’s underutilized blank brick exposures could become opportunities for public art that improves the city both visually and environmentally.
