- description:
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. OddFellows is a unique and rapidly expanding ice cream brand based in Brooklyn, New York. We were asked to design their first store in Massachusetts, located in The Street at Chestnut Hill.
The long and narrow existing space presented a variety of challenges. The sole source of light was from a narrow storefront, and the front half of the space was almost twice as tall as the rear. We designed a sloping matrix of light fixtures to mediate between these two zones, activating the volume above guests as they enter. A large, angled mirror amplifies this condition to surprising effect, intensifying the effect of the lighting and reflecting light further into the space.
Closer to the ground, an elongated counter top provides all of the necessary space for preparing, serving, and checking out. All equipment and storage is integrated into the millwork, allowing the ice cream itself to shine. A mix of bar, banquette, and table seating allows customers of all types to find a relaxing place to enjoy a cone. These elements are brought together through a warm, bright material palette that builds upon and reinterprets the existing brand standards.
