Ji Shi joined MERGE architects in November 2019. Ji is a Registered Architect in New York and holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton University School of Architecture. Ji’s graduate thesis “Architectural Softness” examined architectural applications of pneumatic system through the design of a self-balancing tower using pressurized polyurethane air pillows.
Prior to joining MERGE, Ji held positions at Archi-solution Workshop and Kennedy & Violich Architecture. Ji was awarded the 2017 Emerging Curators Project of Power Station of Art, Shanghai. His academic work has been exhibited internationally and published in renowned journals and conferences, including CDRF 2019, CAADRIA 2018, Seoul Biennale 2017, Room1000, Palimpsest and Time+Architecture. Ji has taught design workshops at Tsinghua University as well as served as a Teaching Assistant at Princeton University.
Ji’s recent practice is focused on developing architectural robots. His design approach revolves around prototyping systems through a combination of sensing, programming and actuation. He is also a maker and has a lovely collection of electronics. Ji spends most of his spare time wiring and soldering his little machines.
