Corey Gibbons joined MERGE Architects in February 2020. He is a registered architect in Massachusetts and received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology. While there, he studied abroad in Berlin and served as a teaching assistant to undergraduate students, mentoring them and offering guidance on their studio projects.
During his time at WIT, Corey developed an understanding of architecture as something that, despite its typically static nature, can perform. Through his thesis titled “Architecting: Revealing the Latent,” he argues that, amongst its many performances, architecture, when not simply viewed as a visual object, has a unique ability to reveal the latent potential surrounding it by bringing to the forefront that which may not have been noticed or recognized. Architecture’s situation in a topography can elucidate previously unknown relationships and conditions, providing new awareness to its inhabitants and an enriched perception of the context it belongs to. And it is the role of the architect to instantiate such possibilities.
Prior to joining MERGE, Corey worked at Elkus Manfredi Architects and Perkins and Will in Boston. During his time at these offices, he gained a wide array of skills and experience working on projects at a variety of scales and uses, including the Auerbach Center, the New Balance Sports Research Lab, and New Balance Track and Field building, each located in Boston.
Corey continues to be interested in architecture’s capacity to incite delight.
