- description:
The Brush Park Neighborhood explores a reinterpretation of the Duplex and Carriage House typologies as a catalyst for rapid urban renewal in an area of Detroit, Michigan that has been demolished, abandoned and essentially desolate for decades. Our proposal for the Duplette Redesign project is a second iteration of the Duplex project.
The Duplette project is sited at the perimeter of the Brush Park development, directly across from Historic Homes north of the site. This housing block is composed of efficiently stacked units with alternating and shifting balconies on the exterior, creating a cohesive and non-repetitive form. Interior corridor space is minimized with double story units, eliminating the need for a common corridor altogether on the fourth floor.
Depth and variation is added to the exterior of the building through brick color variation and strategically designed areas of textured brick in both protruding and recessed patterns. The grey brick exterior contextualizes the building amongst the historic red buildings in the area. Grey brick offers a contemporary palette, accented by warm cedar siding through the balconies and recessed areas.
